Nintendo Switch Game Codes

Last updated: Download codes redeemed in the Nintendo eShop

Active Nintendo Switch game codes

Nintendo Switch game codes are one-time codes tied to a purchase or a promotion, so there are no shared codes to copy. Any site listing free codes or offering a code generator is not real.

Nintendo Switch game codes are 16-character download codes that you redeem in the Nintendo eShop to get a full game, DLC or other content. They come from retail cards, gift purchases and promotions, and every code is unique and works only once. That means there is no public list of free codes, and this page does not offer one. Instead, it shows you exactly how to redeem the code you have, and what to do when it does not work.

Everything here follows Nintendo's own support guide, linked below. If you have a code from a card or an email, you can redeem it in about a minute on the console.

How to redeem Nintendo Switch game codes

  1. Make sure your Nintendo Switch is connected to the internet.
  2. Select Nintendo eShop on the HOME Menu.
  3. Choose the user account you want to redeem the code on. The content goes to that account.
  4. Select Enter Code. If user verification is turned on, you may need to confirm your identity first.
  5. Type in the 16-character download code.
  6. Select OK. The game starts downloading as soon as the code is confirmed, and its icon appears on the HOME Menu with a progress bar.

Choose the right account before you redeem. Content is tied to the Nintendo Account on the user you selected, so redeeming on a family member's profile gives the game to them.

What a valid download code looks like

Knowing the format helps you spot typos and fakes:

  • Length: 16 characters.
  • First character: the download code usually starts with the letter B.
  • No hyphens: download codes never contain hyphens.
  • Missing letters: O, I and Z are never used in download codes, so the on-screen keyboard disables them.
  • Control number: retail cards may show a second code that usually starts with S and has hyphens. That is the control number, not the download code. Do not enter it.

Common errors and how to fix them

These are the errors players see most often when redeeming a download code:

  • Code not accepted: check you are entering the 16-character download code, usually starting with B, not the control number that usually starts with S.
  • Switch 2 code on a Switch: the message says the code is for content only accessible on Nintendo Switch 2. It cannot be redeemed on an original Nintendo Switch.
  • This Code Has Already Been Used: the code was redeemed before. Check your other user accounts in case someone redeemed it on a different profile, and see Nintendo's support article for this error.
  • No internet connection: the eShop needs a connection to redeem a code.

Redeem a code away from your console

If you are not near your Nintendo Switch, Nintendo's support guide says you can also redeem a download code online, and links to the steps. This is handy when you receive a code as a gift and want to make sure they are claimed straight away.

Whichever way you redeem, the content is tied to the Nintendo Account you use, so double-check you are signed in to the right account first.

Watch out for free code scams

Because every download code is unique and tied to a purchase or promotion, no site can give away working codes to everyone. Sites, videos and social posts that promise free codes or code generators are scams. Some try to collect your account details.

Only redeem codes from trusted sources such as retail cards, official promotions or gifts from people you know, and never share your Nintendo Account password.

Where Nintendo Switch game codes come from

Legitimate download codes reach you in a few ways, and all of them start with a purchase or an official promotion:

  • Retail cards: download cards sold in shops. The card shows the 16-character download code and often a separate control number.
  • Digital purchases: codes bought from an authorized retailer arrive by email or in your order history.
  • Gifts: someone who bought a code can pass it on to you to redeem on your own account.
  • Promotions and bundles: some consoles, accessories and events include a code for a game or extra content.

If you got a code any other way, especially from a site offering free codes, be careful. It is almost certainly fake or already used.

Check these things before you redeem

A minute of checking saves a lot of trouble, because the content goes to the account you redeem it on:

  • Right account: select the user whose Nintendo Account should own the content.
  • Right console: if the code is for Nintendo Switch 2 content only, redeem it on a Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Right code: use the download code, not the control number.
  • Internet connection: the eShop needs to be online to accept the code.
  • User verification: if your account asks for verification, have your password or PIN ready.

How we check this page

Everything on this page comes from official sources, and we check it by hand. We never publish lists of Nintendo Switch game codes, because each code is unique and works only once. If a site claims to have free codes for everyone, it is not telling the truth.

This page was last checked on October 20, 2026. We never make up codes or rewards, and we keep a list of the sources behind every code. If something on this page no longer matches what you see in the game, tell us with the Feedback button and we will check it again.

If you are unsure whether a code, a prize or a website is genuine, compare it with the official source linked on this page before you enter any details, and never share your password or payment details with a site that promises free codes.

Nintendo Switch game codes FAQ

How do I redeem Nintendo Switch game codes?

Open the Nintendo eShop, choose your account, select Enter Code on the left, type the 16-character code and select OK.

Why is my Nintendo Switch code not working?

Check that you entered the 16-character download code, which usually starts with B, not the control number, which usually starts with S. The code may also be for Switch 2 only, or already used.

Do I type the hyphens in the code?

No. Enter only the 16 letters and numbers, without hyphens or spaces.

Are there free Nintendo Switch game codes?

Not legitimately as a public list. Every code is unique and works once. Sites offering free codes or code generators are scams.

Can I redeem a code without my console?

Yes. Nintendo lets you redeem a download code online when you are away from your system. Its support guide links to the steps.

Does the game download automatically after I redeem a code?

Yes. The download starts once the code is confirmed, and the game's icon appears on the HOME Menu with a progress bar.

Which letters are never in a download code?

O, I and Z are not used, and download codes never contain hyphens. The on-screen keyboard disables those characters.

What does the control number on my card do?

The control number usually starts with S and has hyphens. It is not the download code, so do not enter it in the eShop.

Can I redeem a Switch 2 code on an original Switch?

No. If a code is for content only accessible on Nintendo Switch 2, the eShop shows an error on an original Nintendo Switch.

Where do I find the code on a retail card?

The download code is printed on the card, usually starting with B and without hyphens. Do not confuse it with the control number, which usually starts with S.

Can I get a refund for a code I redeemed on the wrong account?

The content goes to the account you redeemed it on, so choose carefully. If something went wrong, contact Nintendo support, since only Nintendo can look at your account.

How long is a Nintendo Switch download code?

A download code is 16 characters long. It usually starts with B, never contains hyphens, and never uses the letters O, I or Z. If the code you are typing does not match, check that it is not the control number.
